Definition: One of the four main general emotional competency traits also related to the Warm and Social and the Talking traits. It includes the ability to both talk and get ideas across to people and the ability to start a conversation with a stranger.

Those who communicate make sure their ideas get across to others the same way they intended them. They are not afraid to speak up and say what they think.

Those who don’t communicate are either unable to clearly express their ideas or feel uncomfortable expressing their ideas and keep quiet.

What the Trait is NOT: A desire to talk or listen. An ability to listen. An ability to write.

Job Requirement: Needed more in sales, customer service and management positions than technical or clerical positions. A good profile for a technical person will be low on this trait compared to the other three main ability traits. A good profile for a management or sales person will rate high on this trait compared to the other three main ability traits.

Closely Related Traits: Talking and Warm and Social.

REGARDLESS OF HOW HIGH OR LOW THIS TRAIT IS YOU CANNOT MAKE A COMPETENCY JUDGMENT ON ONE TRAIT ALONE.

The SL Behavioral Aptitude has 6 direct questions for communication and 10 indirect questions. The IC Behavioral Aptitude has 6 direct and 9 indirect questions.

TRAIT RANGES:

Extreme Low: 0 to 4. Low scores on this trait show the person lacks ability to both talk and get ideas across to people and/or to start conversations with strangers.

Low Range: 5 to 29. Low scores on this trait show the person lacks ability to both talk and get ideas across to people and/or to start conversations with strangers. This is an extremely important trait for jobs requiring a need to express ideas effectively but of little importance to those in clerical or technical type positions. Make sure this trait is above the minimum benchmarks for the job they are applying for.

Medium Range: 30 to 45. A borderline reading on this trait is 40.

High Range: 46 to 89. These people have the ability to talk, get ideas across to people and meet strangers.

INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:

In social situations do you prefer listening or talking? (It must be just one.)  Why is that?

What experience have you had with that?  (Ask more questions about it.)

What special efforts do you take to get your ideas across to others?  Question the practicality of those answers. (To make sure it’s not just a theory)

What is your communication style?  Why is it effective?

When have you had to explain a complicated idea or concept to someone else?  Why was it important they understood it?  How did you do it?  What will you do differently next time?

How do you know if someone understands the ideas you are trying to communicate?

When have you seen someone try to communicate and it was ineffective?  Why were they ineffective?  What would you have done differently?

Has anyone ever misunderstood an e-mail that you wrote?  Why did that happen?

Have you ever misunderstood someone else’s email?  How did you handle that?  What happened?

Does it seem effortless on your part to keep social conversations going with strangers?  Why is that?  What experience have you had with that?  (Ask more questions about it.)

Do you go overboard trying to convince others of your ideas?  (If yes.) How do you do that?  (If no.) What do you do?
