Use the Consistency Rating to Spot Unreliable Assessment Results

The Consistency Rating detects careless or contradictory answers so you can decide whether to trust the rest of the results.

When a candidate rushes through the assessment or answers questions without reading them carefully, the scores that follow lose their meaning. Therefore, the Consistency Rating catches that problem before it affects your hiring decision.

  • Appears on the results page alongside the candidate's trait scores
  • Produces one of three readout descriptions that tell you how much to trust the results
  • Works together with Analytical Intelligence and Personal Assessment Honesty to build the full reliability picture

What Is the Consistency Rating?

The Consistency Rating describes how consistently the candidate engaged with the assessment. It is calculated from four questions that appear twice in identical form throughout the assessment. When candidates read and answer carefully, both sets of answers should match.

In addition, several other factors contribute to the final rating, making it a multi-point check rather than a single comparison. Together, these factors determine whether the trait scores that follow are worth analyzing.

Why inconsistency is hard to catch in an interview

Interview performance does not reveal how a candidate approached a written assessment. However, a candidate who gave rushed or careless answers can still present confidently in person. As a result, the inconsistency goes undetected until a hiring decision has already been made.

What the Consistency Rating evaluates

  • Whether the candidate read and followed the assessment instructions
  • Alignment across the four repeated identical questions
  • How internally coherent the overall response pattern is
  • The level of care taken, and whether it is sufficient to produce a reliable result

The Consistency Rating does not evaluate honesty or character. It measures the quality of the candidate's engagement with the assessment itself.

Why the Consistency Rating Matters in Hiring

Consistency is the first thing to check on any report. It determines whether the trait scores beneath it can be trusted at all — which makes it the difference between a profile that guides a decision and one that quietly misleads it.

Result Integrity

An inconsistent result means trait scores cannot be taken at face value. Using unreliable data directly raises the risk of a poor hiring decision.

Time and Resources

Investing interview time and onboarding costs in a candidate whose scores are not dependable is a costly mistake the Consistency Rating helps you prevent.

Assessment Confidence

A high Consistency rating signals that the full trait profile is built on a solid foundation and is ready to guide your evaluation.

What gets missed when the Consistency Rating is ignored

What gets missed when the Consistency Rating is ignored

Hiring managers who skip the Consistency Rating may draw conclusions from trait scores that do not reflect the candidate accurately. First, consider how each of the following problems can distort a hiring decision.

  • Trait scores from an inconsistent result may overstate or understate actual tendencies
  • Behavioral predictions lose accuracy when the underlying data is unreliable
  • Comparing candidates becomes misleading if one completed the assessment carelessly
  • A low Consistency score paired with low Analytical Intelligence often signals a reading comprehension issue, not a character problem

How Consistency Connects to Other Scores

The Consistency Rating works alongside other reliability indicators.
Therefore, review these scores together for the most complete picture of assessment quality.

Analytical Intelligence

Read Consistency alongside AI. Low AI (below 24) suggests the candidate struggled to understand the questions; adequate AI with low Consistency points to careless engagement.

Personal Assessment Honesty

A separate reliability dimension that measures whether the candidate answered the behavioral questions candidly. It combines with Consistency to build the full reliability picture.

Dishonesty

A behavioral trait measuring tendency toward deception in the workplace. Distinct from Consistency, which evaluates assessment engagement quality rather than character.

Accuracy of Results

The composite reliability indicator. When both Analytical Intelligence and Consistency are flagged, Accuracy of Results returns UNRELIABLE regardless of the Assessment Honesty score.

Best Practice: Always check the Consistency Rating before interpreting any behavioral trait scores. A high Consistency reading means the profile that follows is built on a solid foundation.

Three Consistency Levels and What They Mean

The assessment produces one of three readout descriptions based on the candidate's response pattern. Unlike other scores, Consistency is not expressed as a number. Instead, it is a qualitative signal based on response patterns across the assessment.

Unreliable

The results of all these assessments are unreliable.

Do not use the trait scores. Accuracy in this category reaches approximately 60% and should not guide any hiring decision.

Some Inconsistency

“This person answered the questions well enough for an acceptable result.”

Results are usable but interpret them with care before drawing firm conclusions.

High Consistency

"This person must have read and answered the questions very thoroughly."

Results are reliable and ready to use — approximately 90% accuracy.

How to Respond to Each Consistency Level

Your next step depends on which level the candidate received. Also, keep in mind that the Consistency level affects how you should read every other trait on the report.

What to Do Based on Your Critical Score

Proceed with the full results. Review all trait scores and use them to guide your interview and evaluation.

Use results with caution. The trait scores are usable but limited. Treat the profile as a directional signal rather than a definitive measure.

Do not use the trait scores for decision-making. Consider re-administering the assessment or supplementing with structured interview questions.

Assessment results support decisions — they don't make them. Always interpret scores in context: the specific role, interview performance, references, and your organization's culture. No single score should be a standalone disqualifier.

Which Roles Require the Closest Consistency Review

Every candidate who completes the behavioral assessment generates a Consistency score. Consequently, the rating is worth reviewing for any position before you draw conclusions from any trait result.

When to Follow Up After a Low Consistency Score

  • Ask the candidate to retake the assessment if time allows
  • Use structured interview questions to probe the traits the assessment flagged
  • Check if the role requires reading-intensive tasks and cross-reference with the Analytical Intelligence score
  • Document the low Consistency score in the candidate record for team review

Frequently Asked Questions About the Consistency Rating

What does a low Consistency score mean?

It means the candidate answered some questions differently the two times they appeared in identical form. This can happen because the candidate rushed, did not read carefully, or had difficulty understanding the questions. It does not indicate dishonesty on its own.
